Welcome to the Silver Screen – European Film Festival for Generations

In a nutshell

Promoting the idea of healthy ageing and improving quality of life for older people with an Intergenerational European Film Festival in different European cities, (especially Frankfurt am Main, Hanau, Heidelberg, Mannheim, Lisbon, London, and Manchester). Our aim is to create new opportunities for social exchange between old and young and implement cultural activities that invite all generations to meet, get to know and learn from each other.

Background

As the patron of the festival, former German federal minister and head of the biggest German umbrella organisation for seniors (BAGSO) Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ursula Lehr put it “We were what you are – and you will become what we are” (Wir waren, was ihr seid – und Ihr werdet, was wir sind) ageing is something that touches everybody. Ageing does not have to be seen merely as being connected to limitations and restrictions, but can also involve new outlooks, curiosity, and opportunities. This understanding is equally important for people of all ages. The Silver Screen Festival promotes the idea of healthy ageing and improving quality of life for older people. And since going to the cinema is a popular part of our culture and heritage, the main activity will be based around showing films to intergenerational audiences in community groups, schools and cinemas. These films will portray positive images of older people, and interaction will be through a mixture of activities, e.g. having a Silver Screen Lounge with tea and coffee, film discussions with directors, actors, film experts or other interested local partners working in the field of health promotion for older people.

What we propose

The Silver Screen Intergenerational Film Festival is a European project founded by Dr. Michael Doh (University of Heidelberg) and Matthias Roos (Public Health Agency of the City of Frankfurt am Main).

In cooperation with the International Relations Office of the City of Frankfurt an exchange platform for representatives from different European countries and Frankfurt's partner cities is envisioned.

By inviting senior citizens and decision makers from all over Europe, the Silver Screen Festival and its partners plan to foster the links between cultural activities and healthy ageing and provide support for new steps towards creating “Pro Ageing Europe”. Become part of it and join us!
